Should You Hire a Credit Repair Company?
Ever since the market began to take a down turn in 2007, more and more people have suffered from credit issues. At the same time, your credit report is now being used for more purposes. Not only do potential creditors review your credit report, but so do potential employers, landlord and insurance companies. This means that a bad credit score can have more impact on your life that just your ability to get a loan. This means that there are many people with low credit scores looking for help in rectifying the situation. There are also many “experts”, both good and bad, offering their services to help people with their situation. Is hiring a credit repair company a wise move?
The reality is that credit repair is not all that complicated, but it does take some time and persistence. To do it properly, you should have a solid understanding as to what options are available to you. However, as long as you are reasonably intelligent credit repair is something that you should be able to learn and handle yourself. This can save you the cost of hiring a professional, and also help eliminate the risk of getting scammed. However, if you do not have the time to work on your credit consistently or are not willing to get a complete credit education, then hiring a credit repair company is better than doing nothing at all.
One thing to keep in mind when shopping for a credit repair company is that you should not pay them before they have rendered service. This is not an issue of their private policies, it is law! The Credit Repair Organizations Act prohibits credit repair companies from charging clients up front. If a company is trying to get you to pay up front, they are not acting in compliance to the law and you should avoid doing business with them. Chances are as soon as you pay them your phone calls will suddenly be avoided! Legitimate credit repair companies may charge a small fee up front, but the vast majority of their fees will be charged as services are rendered. Even if they tell you they know how to improve credit score fast, you should have realistic expectations.
